Hunter stumbles upon human skull of man who vanished 6 years ago, SC officials say
A hunter stumbled upon a human skull that belonged to a man missing for six years, South Carolina officials said.
Gregory McSwain Morgan was 38 years old when he was last seen leaving a Dollar General store. He was reported missing in July 2017, sparking a yearslong mystery, according to the Laurens County Sheriff’s Office and the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System website.
Then, six years after Morgan disappeared from the Joanna area, officials on Nov. 15 announced that he had been found dead.
New clues started emerging in October, when a landowner returning from a hunting trip discovered a possible human skull, the Laurens County Coroner’s Office wrote in a news release.
Crews took a closer look and found 95% of the person’s skeletal remains. Officials reportedly conducted “extensive testing” and compared dental records to confirm the remains belonged to Morgan.
Morgan’s remains were taken to a medical examiner’s office, which determined that there were no signs of trauma. A final report is pending, according to the coroner’s office.
“We know this has been a very trying and stressful time for the family of Greg Morgan,” Laurens County Sheriff Don Reynolds wrote in a Facebook post. “I hope that this conclusion brings closure to his family. Our sympathy is with them.”
Joanna is roughly 55 miles southeast of Greenville.
