Mom’s hankering for Cracker Jack leads her to big Maryland lottery win — eventually
A woman walked into a Maryland gas station, hungering for Cracker Jack.
As she was searching the Hanover gas station, she was having trouble finding a box of the snack, Maryland Lottery officials said in a March 28 news release.
So, she enlisted the store owner’s help.
As he looked “high and low” for the snack, the woman told lottery officials she decided to “play her favorite game,” Racetrax.
The woman placed a $12 bet that horses 8, 9, 10 and 12 would finish in the top four in any of five races, lottery officials said.
Shortly thereafter, lottery officials said the store owner returned, telling the woman the store didn’t have Cracker Jack.
Forgetting about the bet she had placed, the woman headed home.
Later, she remembered about her ticket and checked to see if she had won, but she was soon disappointed.
“I thought I missed it,” the woman said, adding she sent a photo of her ticket to her son.
Her son checked the ticket online and was puzzled.
“I said, ‘What are you talking about, ma, you did win,’” the man told lottery officials.
Turns out, the woman’s “horses finished together in the fourth race,” earning her $29,313.30.
The woman told lottery officials she plans to use part of her win toward “two of her children’s’ upcoming weddings.”
Hanover is about an 11-mile drive southwest from Baltimore.
