23-year-old drowns on boating trip as family tries saving him, cops say. ‘Loved by many’
Family members attempted to save 23-year-old Patrick Todd from drowning in a Michigan lake on Memorial Day, but he slipped under the water, police and family members said.
As Todd and his family members had docked the boat on Memorial Day and were walking on a sandbar at Belleville Lake near Firecracker Island, a current pulled Todd and one other under the water, WDIV reported.
The other family member made safely resurfaced, according to WDIV.
Todd was last seen wading in the lake before he slipped underwater around 4 p.m., police said.
One family member tried to save him but was unsuccessful, and someone called police for help, Van Buren Township police said in a news release. Divers arrived at the scene and began looking for the man.
Rescuers found his body in 11 feet of water, police said. Now, his family is grappling with the loss.
“I will cling on to each and every memory we have,” his mother Cheryl Lynn Todd said in a Facebook post. “He was funny and loved by many.”
Van Buren Township is about a 30-mile drive southwest of Detroit.
