11-year-old dies after getting stuck in creek as others try to save her, CA cops say
An 11-year-old girl died after getting stuck in a creek as others tried to save her, California deputies said.
Dana Nino Gonzalez was swimming in Alameda Creek on Memorial Day when she got “stuck against the flow control structure,” the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office said in a June 4 Facebook post
.
When deputies arrived, they saw community members trying to pull her from the water.
Rescuers “entered the creek and attempted to rescue Dana from a hole in the flow control structure,” according to the post .
Deputies said they along with rescuers from the Fremont Fire Department recovered Dana from the creek.
Dana was rushed to a hospital, where she later died, according to the sheriff’s office.
“This tragedy saddens us,” deputies said.
Deputies urged visitors enjoying “warm-weather activities near waterways” to heed “posted warning/caution signs, make a safety plan, wear safety equipment such as a life jacket.”
Visitors should also not swim alone, as well as avoid the water if they do not know how to swim, deputies said.
Alameda County is about a 55-mile drive southeast from San Francisco.
