A three-vehicle crash erupted “into a large disturbance” at a Florida intersection when one driver grabbed a golf club and started wielding it like a sword, according to investigators.

This happened after the club head snapped off — while being used to break someone’s car window, the Cape Coral Police Department wrote in a June 10 news release. Cape Coral is about a 130-mile drive south from Tampa.

The 38-year-old was arrested shortly after noon on Sunday, June 9, when a Ford F150 “rear-ended the Chevrolet Malibu, which rear-ended the Jeep Wrangler,” police said.

A 911 caller reported the crash resulted in a brawl “between involved parties.”

“The driver of the Jeep told officers when he and his passenger went to take photos ... (the F150 driver) started shoving him toward oncoming traffic. ... He said he saw (the F150 driver) go back to his truck and grab a golf club, which he then used to shatter the driver’s side window of the Jeep.”

“The golf club snapped, and the driver of the Jeep said (the suspect) started stabbing at him with the broken end of the club.”

Other witnesses “corroborated” the confrontation, officials said.

Among them was the Malibu driver, who reported the F150 driver “approached her vehicle and was hitting her window with the golf club until officers arrived,” officials said.

The blood-covered man was “combative and physically aggressive” with first responders, including spitting blood at them, officials said.

He faces 11 charges:

  • 1 count of DUI, blood alcohol Level 0.15 or higher
  • 3 counts of DUI damage to property and personal injury
  • 2 counts of battery touch or strike
  • 1 count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon
  • 1 count of aggravated assault with the intent to commit a felony
  • 1 count criminal mischief $1,000 or more
  • 1 count battery on specified personnel (first responders)
  • 1 count in violation intimidation threats against a law enforcement officer
