A “wrinkly” dog with “sad infected eyes” kept returning to a shelter — then his luck changed.

Arlow got a fresh start at All Hound Rescue of Florida, which helped him get a much-needed eye surgery.

“So far so good,” the Port St. Lucie-based rescue wrote July 15 on Facebook. “We hope to have him up for adoption in the next month, but will ensure he is healed and ready before we find his perfect and last home.”

Arlow arrived at the rescue in May after one of its other bloodhounds went missing. The animal organization was calling around when a shelter told them about a similar dog named Arlow, according to the social media post and details president Andi Nicoletto told McClatchy News in a phone interview.

“We were asked to help Arlow find a forever home after he was adopted and returned twice from a shelter,” the rescue wrote. “It wasn’t his personality or size that had Arlow coming back, but his sad infected eyes. No one seemed to be able to get a handle on helping him get well.”

The animal organization found the lost dog and also took in Arlow. The rescue, which believed Arlow had trouble seeing, determined the hound needed a procedure to fix an issue with his eyelashes.

“Without this surgery, his quality of life would greatly suffer, or possibly a fate even worse,” the rescue wrote.

Arlow, now on the mend, is in foster care in Ocala, a roughly 80-mile drive northwest from Orlando. He’s expected to become available for adoption in August.

Meanwhile, Arlow is described as a “sweet, squishy, wrinkly 120lb” dog. He’s about 5 years old and loves treats.

“Those eye issues don’t seem to have inhibited his ability to love and be loved,” Nicoletto said. “He’s like most bloodhounds. He’s got that floppy, Scooby-Doo run to him.”

More details about the rescue organization’s adoption process can be found at allhoundrescue.org.
