As a Massachusetts mechanic looked under the hood of a car and into the engine compartment, he noticed something furry.

Upon taking a closer look, the Mavis Tire and Brakes mechanic realized it was a wee kitten, the Animal Rescue League of Boston said in a July 24 news release.

Though it’s not clear how the 9-week-old kitten found its way under the hood, the rescue said “it’s likely he was spooked by something and was seeking a seemingly safe place to hide.”

A Dedham Animal Control officer safely removed the kitten from its hiding spot, “ending his harrowing adventure,” the rescue said.

Aside from needing a little cleaning “to remove the motor oil from his fur,” the kitten was just fine.

“Thankfully the kitten was not injured or burned while the car was in motion,” the rescue said.

After his rescue and clean up, he was taken to the rescue for a veterinary checkup.

The kitten will be put up for adoption when “he’s old enough to find a loving home,” the rescue said.

The kitten, now named Mavis, is currently being fostered but will be put up for adoption when “he’s old enough to find a loving home,” the rescue said.

“Although timid, Mavis is a sweet and friendly kitten, who is sure to be a wonderful companion animal and will now be an indoor-only cat to avoid future car adventures,” the rescue said.
