On his way home from work one day, a Maryland man made a stop that changed everything.

The man, a packaging official living in Frederick County, left work and walked into Mountain View Convenience & Food Mart in Thurmont, according to a July 25 news release from the Maryland Lottery.

He stood in line and asked for two $5 Money Money Money tickets.

He scratched the first of the two and saw a matching number, and then below it, the ticket read $50,000, officials said.

“I wasn’t expecting to win anything big,” he told lottery officials. “When I saw how much of a win it was, I was a little unsure.”

He took the ticket back to the retailer. It was confirmed.

In shock, he called his daughter, officials said. Then, he locked the winning ticket in a safe until he could claim his prize.

The man plans to use some of his winnings to help his family and save the rest.

Thurmont is about a 60-mile drive northwest from Baltimore.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
