71-year-old went missing on Grand Canyon boating trip, rangers say. Now, body found
A 71-year-old was found dead in the Grand Canyon’s Colorado River after vanishing on a boating trip, rangers said.
The man was reported missing at about 9:15 p.m. Sept. 9 from the Lower Nankoweap Camp along the river, the National Park Service said in a news release.
Rangers were scanning the area by helicopter Sept. 10 when they spotted his body in the Colorado River near river mile 63.5, park officials said.
“Initial information suggests the body is that of a 71-year-old male who was reported missing,” officials said in the release.
Park officials and the medical examiner’s office are investigating his death.
It’s the second reported death in the national park in three days.
A 59-year-old Colorado man was found dead in the canyon by his river trip group on Sept. 7, McClatchy News reported.
As one of the most popular national parks in the U.S., over 4.7 million people visited the Grand Canyon in 2023.
