A group of hikers in New Hampshire’s White Mountains encountered a 63-year-old Pennsylvania man unconscious on the trail, rescuers say.

It was 8 a.m. on Sept. 11 and the group stopped on the Mount Monroe Loop Trail and called for help, New Hampshire Fish and Game said in a news release. Rescuers were on their way, but the location was remote, so the group decided to get the man off the trail themselves.

Using a litter, also known as a tarp stretcher, the group carried the man to the Lakes of the Clouds Hut, a historic lodge 0.1 miles away from where they found him, Fish and Game said.

The man regained consciousness “but was still showing signs and symptoms of a potentially serious medical condition,” officials said.

At 10:02 am, a Blackhawk helicopter from the Army National Guard arrived and landed near the hut. The man from Friendsville was taken inside and transported to the hospital, rescuers said.

His current condition was not provided in the news release.

The Mount Monroe Loop Trail is a little over a half-mile and is considered to be moderate in difficulty, according to Trailforks.

Friendsville is in northern Pennsylvania, near the border with New York and about a 170-mile drive northwest from Philadelphia.
