Grandpa has waitress check lottery ticket. ‘Big’ Maryland prize left him ‘skeptical’

A grandpa was playing pool when he decided to buy a few lottery games, Maryland officials said.

That decision in a Glen Burnie tavern left him smiling at his $30,008 prize, according to an Oct. 2 news release by the Maryland Lottery.

The retired manufacturer bought five rounds of Keno and placed an eight-spot bet, adding the Super Bonus option, officials said.

While the games played on the screen, he kept playing pool, the lottery said.

Then he asked the waitress to check them, officials said.

“You won and it’s big,” she said to the casual lottery player, according to the lottery.

The man couldn’t believe the win.

“I just looked at her and said, ‘Nah,’” he told officials. “I looked on the back of the play card to see how much I won and after the Super Bonus, it was $30,008, but I was still skeptical.”

He called his wife to share the news, lottery officials said.

“She was a huge help, setting me up for an appointment,” the winner said in the release. “And, here I am.”

The lucky man plans to invest some of the money into the stock market, officials said.

Glen Burnie is about a 10-mile drive south of Baltimore.
