A lottery player hit the jackpot — making for a historic win in North Carolina.

The player bought a ticket that matched numbers in a Fast Play instant jackpot game, making it worth $1.1 million. It marks the third-largest Fast Play prize ever won, the N.C. Education Lottery wrote on its website and in a news release.

So where was the lucky ticket sold? It came from the JAD Mart at 4200 Statesville Road in Charlotte, a lottery spokesperson told McClatchy News in an email.

The player scored the windfall after trying their luck on Fast Play’s Break the Bank game early Monday, Oct. 14. Since the player spent $10 on their ticket, they won the full progressive jackpot amount of $1,115,683.

Only two other Fast Play jackpots have been larger. Here’s what we know about those record-setting wins:

  • $1,143,007 ticket sold to Gaston County player in May 2023

  • $1,120,665 ticket sold to Carteret County player in March 2023

As of about 1:30 p.m. Oct. 14, the Charlotte player hadn’t claimed their prize. North Carolina gives winners about six months to cash in, according to game rules.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
