An Alabama man just got rich in Florida, thanks to a lottery ticket sold at a Panhandle gas station.

Jeremy Smith, 49, of Lillian, Alabama, was just on the other side of Pensacola Bay when he stopped at the CEFCO Convenience Store in Gulf Breeze and paid $10 for a Triple 777 ticket.

Odds of winning a $2 million top prize in the scratch-off game are 1 in 2,692,215, but that’s exactly what happened, the Florida Lottery said in a news release.

The win was announced Tuesday, Oct. 22, after Smith made the tough decision of how to collect his winnings: A little at a time or a big lump of cash.

“Smith chose to receive his winnings as a one-time, lump-sum payment of $1,280,000.00,” officials said.

The convenience store also got a $4,000 commission for selling the ticket.

Lottery officials didn’t reveal what Smith intended to do with his money.

His home in Lillian is just on the other side of the Alabama state line, about a 20-mile drive northwest from Gulf Breeze where the ticket was purchased.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
