A beloved high school teacher was shot and killed by her husband with their two daughters present in their home, Nebraska authorities say.

The couple’s 19-year-old daughter called 911 at 3 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 28, to report her father had just shot her mother in their home, Sarpy County Sheriff Jeff Davis said in a news briefing streamed by WOWT. The daughter said her father had also pointed the gun at her, according to the sheriff. Their 14-year-old daughter was also home at the time.

When deputies arrived, the man shot at them from a window, and one of the deputies returned fire, Davis said.

Deputies then went inside the home, where they found the husband and wife both fatally shot, according to the sheriff. It’s unclear if the man’s gunshot wounds were self-inflicted or from a deputy.

Authorities said the daughters and all deputies involved in the incident were not injured.

The wife was identified by the sheriff as Rebecca Geiger, a 45-year-old teacher at Westside High School in Omaha.

District officials said Geiger was a special services teacher.

Mrs. Geiger was an exceptional educator, mentor and good friend to her colleagues,” the district said, KMTV reported. “Her kindness radiated throughout the school; helping students feel seen and valued. This loss will be felt deeply throughout our district.”

The sheriff said deputies had been to Geiger’s home a month prior for a separate domestic incident, but no arrests were made. The husband told authorities, “Be careful, you shouldn’t come back here,” Davis said.
