Security guard wounded in ER shooting in Arizona, cops say. 30-year-old is arrested
A 30-year-old man went to the hospital “as a potential patient” and later shot a security guard after an altercation, police in Arizona said.
The man who was “quickly detained” by other hospital security workers and staff was arrested, the Scottsdale Police Department said in a March 3 post on Facebook.
He was booked into jail on suspicion of aggravated assault - serious physical injury, aggravated assault - deadly weapon, endangerment, disorderly conduct with a weapon and discharge of a firearm in city limits, police said.
McClatchy News isn’t naming him because he hasn’t been charged.
The security guard was hit “in the upper body” and was taken to a trauma center after the shooting, police said. He “continues to receive medical care,” according to police.
The shooting happened at about 1 p.m. on March 2 in the emergency room at HonorHealth’s Shea campus in Scottsdale, according to police.
HonorHealth declined to comment when contacted by McClatchy News.
A relative brought the man to the hospital earlier that day, police said.
Officers were initially “called for a disturbance in the ER” and “that call escalated into an altercation with security,” according to police.
“During that altercation, (the man) produced a gun he brought into the hospital and shot” the guard, police said.
A single round was fired in the “isolated incident,” according to police.
A second security guard suffered a minor injury, police said.
“The Scottsdale Police Department wishes both security guards a speedy and complete recovery. We also want to thank all the HonorHealth staff who helped detain and disarm (the man) for their bravery and decisive action, which helped to bring this incident to a quick conclusion,” officials said in the news release.
The shooting came about a week after a hostage situation at a Pennsylvania hospital left a police officer and the suspect dead and others injured, according to 6ABC and other outlets.
