Do Democrats have a good strategy — or any strategy— for Trump? What a new poll found
Most Americans believe the Democratic Party lacks an effective plan for countering President Donald Trump, according to new polling.
In the latest survey from Blueprint — a polling organization “dedicated to empowering Democrats” — just 10% of respondents said that the party “has a good strategy to respond to Trump and it’s working.”
Meanwhile, more than twice as many respondents, 24%, said the opposition party does have a strategy, but that it is not working. And a plurality of respondents, 40%, said the Democratic Party has no strategy at all for countering Trump.
The poll — which sampled 1,383 registered voters between Feb. 16 and 17 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points — comes six weeks into Trump’s second term, during which time he’s issued a blitz of executive orders, including one that paused all foreign aid and another seeking to end birthright citizenship.
But, how exactly should Democrats respond to Trump? Here, there’s little agreement, at least when it comes to voters overall.
Thirty percent of respondents said Democrats should oppose Trump and undertake efforts to “stop his agenda.” This was the most popular position with Democrats, with 59% favoring it.
Another 30% of Democrats said the Democratic Party should work with the president to carry out his agenda. The majority of Republicans, 60%, took this position.
An additional 31% said that Democrats “should work with Trump when he’s right but resist him when he’s wrong.” This figure included 29% of Democrats and 28% of Republicans.
That said, there was some agreement when it came to characterizing problems within the Democratic party and offering constructive criticism for the future.
Sixty-five percent of respondents said they were persuaded by the following claim: “The Democratic Party needs to get back to basics and remember why people support them in the first place. Protecting Social Security and Medicare, reproductive freedom, workers rights, and an economy that works for everyone is popular.”
Similarly, 65% said they were persuaded by the criticism that “No one has any idea what the Democratic Party stands for anymore, other than opposing Donald Trump.”
Further, 61% said they were convinced by the claim that “Democrats need to stop being so ideological and get back to being the party of the working class that fights for the little guy against the rich and powerful.”
