The former treasurer of an Indiana church used the organization’s funds to pay her expenses, gamble online and go to Disney World, according to court documents obtained by local news outlets.

Amy Nunn, 42, was the treasurer for Grand Avenue Baptist Church in New Castle, Indiana, from Feb. 2020 to Jan. 2025, according to the Muncie Star Press. Church officials and police estimate that in that time, she stole more than $200,000.

According to the outlet, church officials realized something was wrong when two checks bounced in late 2024, but they didn’t initially suspect Nunn. On Jan. 21, they realized the church’s bank account was $500 in the red. That same day, police said Nunn resigned as a treasurer and Sunday school teacher and confessed to the theft in a letter to church officials.

In the letter, she said her actions were “shameful” and called the church a “major part of (her) life for over 30 years,” the Muncie Star Press reported.

According to The Courier-Times, police said Nunn was the only one who managed church’s financial records, bank accounts, a church debit card and checks.

Nunn is also accused of neglecting to make monthly donations to charitable organizations and a state church organization on the church’s behalf. The Guest House, a men’s shelter focused on addiction recovery, and the Christian Love Help Center, an emergency shelter for women and families, were among them, according to the outlet.

The Courier-Times said it appears some organizations stopped receiving those donations in 2020. A police report said in an interview, Nunn downplayed her guilt, but eventually confessed.

“Nunn’s spending habits and her unfettered access to the church’s monies did not stop until her resignation,” the police report said. “By then, unbeknownst to the rest of the church leaders, the church was operating on a month-to-month basis, surviving only on the weekly tithes and offerings.”

According to a year-by-year breakdown from WXIN, the first and second years Nunn was the treasurer, the church reported $1,140.36 and $1,623.26 stolen. According to court documents, Nunn spent the money on Amazon subscriptions and purchases from Kroger, Walmart, Ace Hardware, Lowe’s and an internet service.

In 2022, $55,740.94 went missing, including $13,609 in tithes and offerings, the outlet reported. Nunn allegedly spent the money on property taxes, Amazon purchases, and payments to utilities. In 2023, $115,328.77 was stolen, WXIN reported, and used for Walt Disney World tickets, BMV payments and insurance.

In 2024, $32,644.40 was reported stolen and used on gambling, Walt Disney Resorts and other purchases, WXIN reported. In 2025, before Nunn resigned, court documents reported $1,489.66 stolen for more gambling and other purchases.

Investigators allege that over five years, $14,845.07 in tithes went unaccounted for and $199,661 was charged to the church account, for a total of $214,506.39, according to WXIN.
