Explore CA’s Green Gables, ‘one of best properties in world,’ listed at $125M
Who wants in on the Bay Area’s historic, 74-acre Green Gables estate that has been called “one of the best properties in the world”?
The Fleishhacker family — who created the serene, ultra-private compound and its famous gardens in 1911 — is offering Green Gables in its entirety for $125 million or in “numerous possible configurations,” meaning one or some of the seven homes and 10 lots.
The portion that includes the English manor-style Green Gables residence and the dramatic 100-yard Roman pool is now on offer for $55 million. The other homes and historic structures, including an equestrian barn, guest houses, pools, tennis courts and a dairy, are on the market to be reimagined as new residences, according to a Compass real estate representative.
The entire California property originally listed for $135 million in 2021, and returned to the market in 2024 at an asking price of $110 million.
Some of the property’s other outstanding features are:
▪ Spectacular main gardens including a 100-yard Roman pool, lily pond and expansive lawns.
▪ Three swimming pools.
▪ Magnificent views.
▪ Flower and vegetable gardens, oaks, redwoods and elms.
▪ Exceptional location near Stanford University, San Francisco, Half Moon Bay, Pebble Beach and Napa and Sonoma wine country.
▪ Self-sustaining water infrastructure with 5-million gallon reservoir.
▪ Tennis court.
“Our family’s desire had always been to sell Green Gables to that one special buyer who is seeking to replicate the full seven-home family compound experience that we have been so fortunate to enjoy for six generations,” seller Marc Fleishhacker said in a statement. “However, we recognize that despite the fact that Silicon Valley has many qualified buyers for such an undertaking, managing 74 acres and all that it comprises is no small task.”
The storied manor may yet catch the attention of Silicon Valley’s elite, according to Compass. Many of the biggest names in Silicon Valley, including late Apple founder Steve Jobs, Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison and SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son, have been attracted to the exclusive town of Woodside because of its private estates.
“We are ... delighted that owning an important piece of Green Gables is an opportunity that is now open to a broader market,” Fleishhacker said. “Each of these new lot configurations offers a truly unique opportunity for one or more families to establish their own country home or estate. Varying in size from 11 acres to 22 acres, this new Green Gables offering will enable a few, fortunate families to own an inspiring part of this epic estate.”
Mortimer Fleishhacker, who built Green Gables, was a lumber, paper, banking and hydroelectric power entrepreneur who co-founded the Great Western Power Company. A purchase would be the first time the property ever traded hands.
The seven residences encompass a total of 34 bedrooms, 26 bathrooms and 24,000 square feet of living space. The real estate gem was the vision of renowned Craftsman-era architects Charles and Henry Greene, blending the charm of English and Italian countryside living with a vast landscape of edible gardens, groves and rolling hills.
“I consider Green Gables one of the best properties in the world,” Maurico Umansky, star of the Netflix series “Buying Beverly Hills,” previously told The Sacramento Bee.
Green Gables is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
“Having grown up in Woodside and after living here with our family for the past 40 years, Brad and I can honestly say that the ability to purchase the 74-acre Green Gables estate in its entirety or in the now available smaller-lot configurations is a once-in-a-generation opportunity,” listing agent Helen Miller of Compass said. “There is nothing like it.”
Her husband Brad Miller is the property’s co-listing agent.
“My husband and partner, Brad, and I remember that first evening we drove up the long estate driveway to the main house, only to be greeted by a sensory experience we will never forget as we took in the artistry of the large main home, the one-of-a-kind enormous rear lawn, the spectacular and colorful surrounding gardens and the football field-sized, lower Roman pool, all framed by an unobstructed view of the Western Hills with the fog lapping over its crest as the sun was setting,” Helen said. “It is mind-boggling.”
