A 6-year-old and 7-year-old were found unconscious in a pool during an employee appreciation event hosted at a country club, Illinois police said.

Staff pulled the two kids from the water and tried to resuscitate them the evening of July 28, Peoria police said in a news release.

The 7-year-old regained consciousness at Mt. Hawley Country Club while the 6-year-old was resuscitated in an ambulance, police said. They were taken to the hospital and are now in critical condition.

McClatchy News reached out to Mt. Hawley Country Club on July 29 but did not immediately receive a response.

The pool was closed to the public for the event, police said. Authorities did not provide additional details about how the children ended up in the pool.

Police said the incident is under investigation.

Peoria is about a 175-mile drive southwest from Chicago.
