It’s common for lottery aficionados to have lucky numbers, but one South Carolina went to extremes when he purchased 162 tickets with the same four digits.

The cost was $339, but the gamble paid off big, according to the South Carolina Education Lottery.

He won $811,000 in the Pick 4 midday drawing on Aug. 7, which counts as the largest single Pick 4 prize in state history, lottery officials said in an Aug. 22 news release.

The lucky player’s name was not released, but the state did reveal the numbers: 1, 7, 3, 1.

“He told staff at the Towne Centre Market on N. Hwy. 17 in Mount Pleasant that he had a good feeling about the numbers 1-7-3-1. So he played those numbers across 162 tickets,” lottery officials said. “Most all of the tickets were played straight at odds of 1 in 10,000.”

But wait, the story gets even stranger.

“Another customer at the Towne Centre Market overheard the man’s hunch, so he played the numbers too and won $25,400,” officials said.

Lottery officials didn’t say how many tickets that customer bought.

Pick 4 is a drawing with tickets ranging from 50 cents to $1. Players have the option of trying to match their four numbers in exact order, or in any order, the game says
