A 2-year-old boy mortally wounded in a dog attack was left unattended for hours as his caregiver slept, according to investigators in south Georgia.

Two rottweilers were involved in the fatal attack, which happened around 3:45 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, in a Valdosta residential neighborhood, the Valdosta Police Department said in an Oct. 5 news release.

“When first responders arrived at the house, they found that the child was deceased,” police said.

“Detectives determined that Stacy Wheeler Cobb, 48, was running an unlicensed daycare at her residence. Earlier in the day, the victim’s mother had taken him to Cobb’s residence for her to watch him for the day. For over two hours, the child was not attended to, as Cobb stated that she was taking a nap and thought the child was as well.”

The boy was attacked when he slipped out into the home’s backyard, and opened a “kennel that housed two large Rottweiler dogs,” officials said.

A fundraising campaign identified the boy as 2 year old Kaimir Jones.

In addition to the two dogs, Lowndes County Animal Control officers confiscated a third dog from the home, officials said. The fate of the three dogs was not revealed.

Cobb was arrested and has been charged with second-degree murder and second-degree cruelty to children, both felony charges, police said.

“The victim was the only child at Cobb’s house when this incident occurred, but on most days, she has around 10 children at her home,” police said.

A fundraising campaign identified the boy as Kaimir Jones.

Valdosta is about a 230-mile drive southeast from Atlanta.
