Gardener spots odd ‘lump’ in yard — and finds rusty old weapon in Norway. See it
While working in her yard in Norway, a woman noticed an unusual “lump” sticking out of the ground. She picked it up and quickly realized she’d found something special.
It turned out to be a rusty old weapon.
Sara Najafi was cleaning up her garden in Søgne when she spotted the strange metal object. She looked closer and recognized it as part of a sword, Agder County Municipality said in a May 9 news release.
A photo shows Najafi holding the worn-looking weapon and standing in the yard next to her dog. She contacted officials about her find, who sent an archaeologist to collect the item and check the garden.
Officials identified the sword as being historic, but its age and use remain a mystery. A close-up photo shows the fragment, which includes the sword’s hilt, hand guard and the base of the blade.
The decent-sized sword weighed about 2 pounds and had a roughly 2-inch-wide blade, officials said. They did not specify its length.
Najafi described her find as exciting.
Officials said they plan to send the historic sword to the Museum of Cultural History in Oslo for conservation and further analysis.
Søgne is a coastal town in southern Norway and a roughly 210-mile drive southwest from Oslo.
