Breaking the Bronze Ceiling: This Lexington statue will make and commemorate history
Crews worked Thursday at the corner of Vine and Mill streets to install a statue of five suffragists, the first statue in downtown Lexington to honor women.
The Breaking the Bronze Ceiling statue by Arizona artist Barbara Grygutis commemorates the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote.
The metal figures, which light up, are approximately 20-feet tall. An official unveiling and dedication of the statue is scheduled for Aug. 18, the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment.
Lexington-Fayette Urban County Councilwoman Jennifer Mossotti spear-headed efforts to construct a statue honoring the achievements of women after discovering downtown Lexington had no monuments to women.
