Josh Hicks chides out-of-touch politicians in first TV ad of fall’s 6th District race
Democrat Josh Hicks started running the first TV ad in the general election campaign for Central Kentucky’s 6th Congressional District on Friday, highlighting his working-class upbringing in rural Kentucky and criticizing out-of-touch politicians.
Hicks, a Lexington lawyer and Marine Corps veteran, is trying to unseat in the Nov. 3 election Republican Andy Barr, who has represented the district since 2013. Libertarian Frank Harris of Lexington also is in the race.
Hicks’ 60-second ad, titled “Somebody,” is narrated by Hicks in rural settings.
“We don’t have enough members of Congress who understand what it feels like to grow up poor… to struggle to put food on the table or struggle to pay for health insurance premiums,” says Hicks in the ad, which never mentions Barr by name.
Hicks, who has pledged not to accept any contributions from corporate political action committees, also criticizes corporate-backed career politicians in Congress.
“Lord, they’ve been in Washington D.C. too long now, accepted too much of them corporate PAC donations to either know or care what it means to the people to be struggling,” he says.
Barr’s campaign did not respond to a request for comment.
Hicks’ campaign said it is spending $200,000 to air the ad on cable, broadcast and digital. It did not say how long it will run on TV.
Hicks grew up on a farm in Fleming County, enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, served as a police officer in Maysville, and graduated from Morehead State University and the University of Kentucky College of Law.
