‘I am doing fine.’ Ron Paul appears to recover after an on-camera medical emergency.
Former congressman and Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul, the father of Kentucky U.S. Sen. Rand Paul, appeared to have a medical emergency during a livestream Friday.
A recording of the livestream showed Paul in front of a backdrop for his podcast, the Liberty Report, talking about the economy before one side of his face began to droop and his words became unintelligible.
Later Friday, Ron Paul posted a photo of himself smiling and giving the camera a thumbs up while wearing a hospital gown.
“I am doing fine,” he said. “Thank you for your concern.”
Doug Stafford, Rand Paul’s chief strategist, shared the photo on Twitter and said “Thank God.”
It remains unclear exactly what happened to Paul. On Twitter, Rand Paul said “Thank God, Dad is doing well” and thanked people for their prayers.
The video prompted an instant response from politicians on Twitter, who said their thoughts and prayers were with the Paul family. U.S. Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Vanceburg, tweeted “prayers,” as did U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas.
“May God’s healing hand be upon Dr. Paul, and may God’s Peace and Grace be upon the entire family,” Cruz tweeted.
Paul ran for president as a libertarian in 1988 and a Republican in 2008 and 2012. His 2008 and 2012 presidential bids helped draw attention to the libertarian philosophy and helped launch the career of the younger Paul, who won his Senate seat in 2012 upon the retirement of former U.S. Sen. Jim Bunning.
