Due to COVID surge, Lexington council moves this week’s meetings to Zoom

The Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council will hold meetings virtually this week due to escalating numbers of coronavirus cases in Fayette County and across the state, city officials said last week.

Kentucky has set records for new infections because of the highly contagious Omicron variant. On Friday, Gov. Andy Beshear announced more than 11,000 new cases and a surging positivity rate of nearly 25 percent.

The Lexington council returned to in-person meetings in the summer of 2021 after holding meetings virtually through much of 2020 when vaccinations were not yet available.

It’s not the only public body to pivot to digital.

Jefferson County Public Schools announced Monday it would switch to remote learning due to a surge in cases in the state’s largest public school district that has caused widespread staffing shortages. Fayette County school officials have said they do not anticipate a return to remote learning at this time.

The council meetings may be viewed on LexTV Spectrum channel 185, MetroNet channel 3, Windstream channels 3 and 20, or via live stream at www.lexingtonky.gov/departments/lextv. Go to Livestream.

People can sign up for public comment for Tuesday’s 3 p.m. council work session or for Thursday’s 6 p.m. council meeting at www.lexingtonky.gov/public-comment.
