Lawmaker proposes ‘President Donald J. Trump Highway’ in Northern Kentucky
A new Kentucky lawmaker has filed a resolution seeking to name a section of a Northern Kentucky highway after President-elect Donald Trump.
Rep. T.J. Roberts, a Republican who represents District 66 in northeastern Boone County, introduced the resolution Jan. 7, the first day of the 2025 legislative session. The resolution requests that the transportation cabinet designate a roughly 12-mile stretch of Route 18 in Boone County as the President Donald J. Trump Highway.
Roberts wrote that Trump “made great improvements to the United States during his time as president” and highlighted several of his political accomplishments in the resolution.
“His accomplishments in the past and for all the things he will do for our country over the next four years, President Trump is worthy of tangible recognition by the Commonwealth of Kentucky,” Roberts wrote in the resolution.
There are three other roads nationwide already named for Trump, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. Roberts’ resolution would designate the first in Kentucky.
Roberts said in an email he hopes to pass the resolution during this session and believes it “clearly aligns with the values of the people of my district.”
The resolution has not received any further action since Roberts filed it, and the legislature won’t reconvene until Feb. 4. The 2025 General Assembly will last 30 days.
The Boone County Democratic Party has opposed the resolution.
“While we respect the office of the presidency, we believe it is inappropriate to name public infrastructure after a living individual, especially when there are countless unsung heroes in our own community who have made lasting contributions to our society,” the party said in a statement posted to Facebook.
The party also encouraged elected officials to prioritize more pressing issues.
“We should be focusing our efforts on finding solutions to housing insecurity, supporting local families, and improving the quality of life for all citizens,” the party said in a statement. “We encourage our leaders to consider the needs of our community and to use their time and resources wisely in ways that will foster unity and progress.”
Roberts was elected as the representative of District 66 this past November when he more than doubled Peggy Houston-Nienaber’s vote total in the general election. Roberts’ campaign was supported by former Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron.
Trump won Kentucky with more than 62% of the vote in each of the past three presidential cycles, including 64.6% in 2024. He won 67.7% of the vote in Boone County last year.
Roberts is an attorney and political operative.
