KY General Assembly calls off Monday session for funeral of lawmaker’s wife
The Kentucky General Assembly will not meet as previously scheduled for its legislative session day Monday and will instead reconvene Tuesday.
House Speaker David Osborne, R-Prospect, confirmed to reporters Friday afternoon the change is because of scheduled funeral services for Jessica Lynn Patton Rudy, the late wife of House Majority Floor Leader Steven Rudy.
“A lot of our members wanted to go down there for the funeral on Monday afternoon,” Osborne said. “Since we had room in the calendar...(and) we consulted with the Senate, and (it) just felt like that it was best to push that day so everybody that wanted to go to West Kentucky for the funeral would be able to do so.”
Jessica Rudy died March 18 at age 42, according to her obituary.
Funeral services take place on Monday at Heartland Church in Paducah at 1 p.m. Visitation services will be held at the church between 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday.
According to her obituary, Rudy worked in administration for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and volunteered at Hope Unlimited and Beyond Uganda. The couple was married for 20 years.
Steven Rudy has served in the House since 2005. A Republican, he represents District 1, which includes Ballard, Carlisle, Fulton, Hickman and part of McCracken counties.
The last time the General Assembly changed its legislative calendar was on Jan. 26, when legislators decided not to convene because of winter weather concerns. It has not been announced whether that day will be made up.
