The Herald-Leader posed seven written questions to the candidates, both Democrat and Republican, seeking to be Central Kentucky’s next member of Congress.

For Democrats, those questions addressed issues like immigration, the economy, the U.S. military’s relationship with Israel, the state of the party and more. All the issues discussed would be relevant to how they navigate their position as the U.S. representative for Kentucky’s 6th Congressional District, should they be elected.

Candidates were limited to 150 words in their responses and agreed not to use artificial intelligence in generating their answers.

Below are Democratic contender Jimmy Ausbrooks’ answers. Other candidate questionnaires can be viewed here.

If you had your way, what healthcare policy would the U.S. pursue and ultimately enact?

The foremost healthcare policy, alongside the implementation of a universal healthcare program, should prioritize the expansion of behavioral and mental health services to all American citizens. This policy would necessitate the establishment of enhanced screening protocols for individuals and the promotion of mental health awareness among all medical professionals, incorporating both foundational educational components and mandatory continuing education requirements.

Furthermore, this initiative would heighten public awareness through national campaigns designed to eradicate the stigma associated with mental health, and would incentivize businesses and communities to participate in mental health awareness and education through federal grants and other allocated resources. The policy mandates the introduction of mental health screening in early education (K-12), higher education institutions, and across all medical interactions, appointments, and emergency departments nationwide.

Affordability is a big buzz word in politics. Aside from rolling back actions of the Trump administration and GOP Congress – where all candidates agree – what would you do to make life more affordable for Kentuckians in the 6th Congressional District?

It is imperative to prioritize the creation of stable employment opportunities for Kentuckians and their families, and concurrently, to ensure a living wage for all citizens. We must comprehensively review and adjust the minimum wage, given that it has remained stagnant for decades. This adjustment must establish the minimum wage at a level that automatically correlates with increases in the standard cost of living. Furthermore, the mechanism for this adjustment should be mandated annually to prevent future periods of prolonged stagnation.

Should the U.S. continue to support Israel’s military? What factors guide your answer?

I maintain the conviction that proper support for our allies is essential; however, this support must be delivered through the authority of the United States Congress, representing the nation, rather than through the unilateral actions of the President or their cabinet. This perspective is guided by the reality that “We the people...” are often excluded from decisions regarding these foreign support initiatives, yet bear the substantial costs, both in terms of taxpayer funds and, frequently, the lives of our military personnel.

Democrats are in the wilderness right now. What’s your advice for fellow Democrats when it comes to winning back power in Congress, the White House and other elected offices?

It is imperative that we unite, implement comprehensive reform, clearly define our principles, understand the essence of public service, and ensure accountability for all individuals, irrespective of political affiliation. As a political entity, we must cease internal conflict, recommit to constructive dialogue, prioritize active listening, and align our interests with those of the nation above our own. I strongly advocate that the moment any member of Congress is elected and sworn into office, their partisan loyalties should be set aside, allowing them to diligently serve the American populace rather than their party’s specific agenda.

Can you describe your ideal U.S. immigration policy? Please provide specifics.

My proposed immigration framework would prioritize practical and rational solutions, offer optimal pathways to citizenship, maintain robust border security, and uphold a commitment to compassion by facilitating necessary avenues for individuals seeking assistance.

What can be done in Congress to boost Central Kentucky’s economy?

Promote economic prosperity by securing high-quality employment opportunities and implementing beneficial practices to attract major businesses to Kentucky. This necessitates coordinated engagement with both federal and state leadership to foster economic expansion. We must prioritize effective collaboration over conflict and, crucially, depoliticize this endeavor by placing the interests of Kentucky above those of any political party or individual leader.

What committees would you like to join and why?

Appropriations, Education and Workforce, Ethics, Homeland Security, Oversight and Government Reform, Ways and Means

These committees are established to enhance accountability, ensure fair and equal representation, uphold our responsibilities, and maintain practical, common-sense governance. Each committee is vital for reform, requiring the consideration of genuine needs, prudent and effective fiscal management, and the consistent practice of ethical and moral accountability. I am confident that with suitable candidates appointed to these committees, substantial change can be achieved.
