Lexington Mayor Jim Gray has raised $1.75 million in his bid to oust incumbent U.S. Sen. Rand Paul, according to a written release from Gray’s campaign Wednesday.

The two-term Democratic mayor and former CEO of Gray Construction loaned his campaign $1 million and raised $750,000 from donors, his campaign said.

The donations are for the first quarter of the year — January through March 31. Gray did not announce he was seeking the Democratic nomination until Jan. 26. Cathy Lindsey, a spokeswoman for Gray’s campaign, said the campaign was able to raise the $1.75 million in just two months. Gray has spent little; the campaign says it has $1.5 million in cash on hand.

Gray is one of seven Democrats running in the May 17 primary. The other Democrats have not released their finance reports.

Paul also has not released his first-quarter report.

They are due by April 15 to the Federal Election Commission.
