Candidate in Fayette County House race calls for opponent to end her campaign after DUI arrest

A candidate in a Kentucky House of Representatives race in Lexington has called for his opponent to resign after she was charged with DUI over the weekend.

Monteia Mundy, a Republican candidate in the race for the 88th District seat, which covers the southern part of Fayette County, was arrested Saturday night and charged with leaving the scene of an accident, driving under the influence and failure to wear a seat belt.

On Tuesday, another GOP candidate, Aaron Yates, called for Mundy to step out of the race.

“While the events of Saturday night are saddening and unfortunate, the fact that she continues her campaign in a race she cannot win makes it clear that she is out of touch with the people and the values of our district,” Yates said in a news release. “Truthfully her actions have already left a stain on our party and our principles, and I urge her to step down and get her life in order before she causes herself and our party further embarrassment.”

Mundy and Yates are both challenging Democratic Rep. Cherlynn Stevenson, who has held the seat since last year.

Kentucky State Police said in an arrest citation that Mundy was involved in a collision near the Love’s gas station on Boonesborough Road in Madison County Saturday night.

State police said witnesses told them they saw Mundy driving on the wrong side of the road before crashing into a ditch. She was found at another gas station less than a half mile away.

Mundy declined to comment on Yates’ call for her resignation, instead pointing to a statement she issued Monday about the incident.

It reads as follows:

“It is with great remorse that I apologize for my actions on Saturday evening. I apologize to my family, my colleagues, and my community. While the news reports are distorted and based on hearsay, I made a mistake. I still feel that this is God’s calling for my life and I am thankful to serve a forgiving Savior. For those of you that know me personally, you know that this is not my normal behavior. I used bad judgment to make a poor and selfish decision and I apologize to everyone that was unknowingly put at risk and let down by it.”
