Marilyn Clark keeps her first district seat on the Fayette school board
In the race for District 1 on the Fayette County Public Schools Board Tuesday, Marilyn Clark kept the seat she was appointed to in January after Christy Morris resigned, according to unofficial election results.
Clark, who was the first Black female on the Fayette school board since integration, defeated Janet Greene, a business development manager in the health care industry.
Clark assumes the District 1 seat on January 1, 2024. District 1 in west Fayette County pulls from areas roughly between Leestown and Harrodsburg roads.
“I am humbled by the win tonight. It was a tough race. Best wishes to Janet Greene. She ran a good campaign,” Clark said in a statement.
“I learned a lot from the people I talked with as I canvassed across District 1. We are fortunate to have a community that cares and invests in our children. It is a privilege to continue in my role on the school board,” she said.
Clark said she will continue to advocate for all children.
Clark, an economic inclusion manager at the University of Kentucky previously held roles at FCPS and the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government.
During the campaign, Clark had said poverty and mental health were growing challenges for the school board. Poverty leads to gaps in education, economic mobility, race and generational wealth.
Greene had promised to support the needs of teachers and ensure that parents had a voice in their child’s education.
Terms on the school board are for four years.
According to an October 25 Kentucky Registry of Election Finance Report, Clark had a beginning balance of $5, 215.08, total receipts of $1,529.70 total expenditures of $4,282.75 and an ending balance of $2,462.03.
