Party planned for South Limestone opening

A street party to celebrate the completion of the yearlong renovation of South Limestone has been set for 4 p.m. to midnight on June 19.

The stretch of South Limestone between Avenue of Champions and Vine Street will be designated a festival area. Restaurants will be open, and there will be entertainment along the route. Wristbands will be required for anyone who wants to be out on the sidewalk carrying an alcoholic drink. The wristbands will be distributed at each end of the corridor. Other designated spots are to be announced later. The event will be free.

The intersections of South Limestone and Avenue of Champions, and Maxwell and High streets will be open to cross traffic. Police officers will be at each intersection to provide for pedestrian security.

George Milligan, the city's streetscape project coordinator, said a date has not been set for when all the street work will be completed, but "the contractor has told us the street will be ready in time for the party," he said.

The final asphalt surface is scheduled to be laid next week.

"There's still quite a bit of fine-tuning stuff to do," Milligan said, including installing all the signs, planting rain gardens and striping the streets. "It's little things, but they take time," he said.
