One bullet injures 2 Eastern Kentucky children. Grand jury to consider case.

A single bullet from a .22-caliber Ruger target pistol injured the two children shot Tuesday in Lawrence County, Kentucky State Police said.

The 11-year-old and 4-year-old children are in stable condition at a West Virginia hospital and each should make a full recovery, said Senior Trooper David Boarman, a spokesman for Kentucky State Police Post 14 in Ashland. He did not know the genders of the two children.

“It would appear the firearm was on a bed and both children were lying on the bed watching television,” Boarman said. “I’m not sure if one of the children had actually obtained it or they had just disturbed it in some way that would have caused it to fire. ... From what we can tell, one shot, a single projectile, went through one child and into the other.”

The projectile did not hit any vital organs.

Boarman said he thought the case would be presented to a grand jury to determine if criminal were warranted, but no charges are currently pending.

The children remained stable at Cabell Huntington Hospital, Boarman said.

The shooting happened on Ramey Branch at about 4:45 p.m. Tuesday. Weather conditions prevented the use of helicopters, so the children were transported by ground ambulance, according to Lawrence County Emergency Management.
