Bus carrying Covington Catholic students back from March for Life is involved in fatal crash

A man died when his car collided with a tour bus carrying Covington Catholic High School students in Campbell County Saturday morning.

The man was driving eastbound in the westbound lanes of the AA Highway when his car crashed into a Gold Shield tour bus carrying students who were returning from the March for Life in Washington, D.C., said Campbell County Assistant Coroner Ron Burchfield.

Burchfield said the bus driver sustained leg injuries, and a few minor injuries were reported among the bus passengers.

He said the crash happened at about 7:20 a.m. near the California, Ky., intersection.

Some witnesses who had avoided a collision with the car had previously called to report a driver headed the wrong way on the highway, Burchfield said.

The bus was one of four buses in a caravan returning from the march, he said.

Burchfield did not release the victim’s name, saying he was not sure the man’s family had been notified. He said the victim was a 39-year-old from Bracken County.

Covington Catholic High School’s Facebook page shared a short statement Saturday, saying “God is our refuge and strength. Thank you for prayers for our school and community.”

Sen. Mitch McConnell responded to the news of the crash in a Facebook post, saying “Elaine and I will keep all involved in our prayers, and we’re thankful to the first responders on the scene.”
