Gourmet burger restaurant closed by Lexington health department over mice

A chain gourmet burger and ice cream restaurant was closed after an inspection by the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department.

Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers, 2500 Polo Club Boulevard, near Costco, was closed on Feb. 4 due to an infestation of mice, according to the health department. Single-service items also were contaminated.

According to a Cabinet for Health Services enforcement notice released by Freddy’s, the inspector found one dead mouse in a trap, as well as mouse feces.

The restaurant will remain closed until after the rodents have been eradicated and management attends a conference with the health department.

A spokeswoman for the Kansas-based chain confirmed the restaurant is planning to reopen.

“The local owner is cooperating with the Health Department, and restaurant management is taking the necessary actions to address their recent findings,” said Kim Huynh, public relations specialist, in an email. “Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers is committed to serving our guests in a safe, clean and welcoming environment. In addition to Health Department inspections, Freddy’s regularly conducts independent, third-party food safety inspections at all locations, which this location passed, most recently, in January.”

The restaurant has been on health department probation since Jan. 30, 2018. It was placed on probation for improper dishwasher sanitizing. To come off probation, restaurants must pass two regular inspections in a row without any priority violations, those considered the most likely to cause public health problems.
