Strong storms leave more than 57,000 customers without electricity in Eastern KY
More than 57,000 customers of Kentucky Power remained without electricity Monday morning after a strong line of storms passed through the area Sunday night, knocking down trees and power lines.
More than 59,000 customers were without power at the peak of the outages, Kentucky Power said in a news release.
Crews found dozens of broken poles in the region, and some roads were inaccessible because of fallen trees and rock slides.
Crews were working Monday to restore power and more workers were on the way, but more outages could occur because of continued high winds, the utility said.
The damage was so widespread that Kentucky Power said it couldn’t estimate how long it would take to restore electricity to all customers. It will likely take several days, however.
The largest number of customers without power Monday was in Perry County, with 15,893, followed by Pike County with 14,945 customers without power. Knott, Leslie and Letcher counties also had thousands of customers without electricity, but nearly every county in the utility’s 20-county region had outages.
Kentucky Power has a total of 165,000 customers in the Eastern Kentucky coalfield.
