Harlan County woman dies after being struck in head with cinder block; nephew charged

A Harlan County woman has died after her nephew struck her in the head with a cinder block, according to Kentucky State Police.

Sherry Brashear, 56, of Evarts died at 2:28 a.m. Tuesday after being flown to Pikeville Medical Center with injuries from the assault, according to state police.

She and her nephew, 35-year-old Derick Adams, got into a verbal argument outside a home off Ky. 38 in Evarts Monday night, according to state police. Adams is accused of physically assaulting Brashear before hitting her in the head with the cinder block.

State police were called to the scene at 8:40 p.m. Monday night and arrested Adams. He was initially charged with first-degree assault in the case and later charged with murder, according to state police.

Adams is being held in the Harlan County Detention Center on a full cash bond of $15,000, according to the jail website.
