Kentucky reports 463 new cases of COVID-19, two new deaths Sunday
Kentucky reported 463 new cases of COVID-19 Sunday, including two new deaths, according to the office of Gov. Andy Beshear.
The cases were reported as of 1 p.m. Sunday and included 11 newly reported cases in children 5 years old or younger. The new cases bring Kentucky’s total to 31,185 cases of COVID-19.
“We appear to be seeing what we all hope is a plateau in the alarming growth of coronavirus cases in the commonwealth,” Beshear said in a release Sunday. “It shows that wearing a mask, social distancing and not traveling to virus hot spots is working. We need to see this trend continue to avoid having to make more hard choices and sacrifices.”
The two new deaths reported Sunday included a 56-year-old man from Oldham County and a 70-year-old woman from Muhlenberg County, according to Beshear’s office. A total of 742 Kentuckians have died of COVID-19.
“We’ve made it to August, and while I know we all hoped months ago when this pandemic first arrived in Kentucky that we’d be closer to a decisive victory, we remain at war with the coronavirus,” Beshear said in Sunday’s release. “We need everyone in this fight, to save lives, to save our economy and to help get our kids back in school. I know we have what it takes and that we’ll do what it takes, because we care about one another.”
Going into August, people will have to be mindful of travel, crowd sizes, hand-washing and face-masks, Public Health Commissioner Steven Stack said in the release.
“I’m cautiously optimistic we have blunted our steep COVID-19 escalation with the mask requirement, restriction of gatherings to 10 or fewer people, bar closings and restaurant capacity restrictions,” Stack said in the release. “This is a prolonged challenge, though.”
Updated positivity rates and an updated number of people who have recovered from COVID-19 will be released Monday, according to Beshear’s office.
