Kentucky woman killed in crash while trying to help another driver, coroner says
A woman in her 30s was killed while trying to help a driver on the shoulder of the interstate Monday, according to the Fayette County coroner’s office.
Shana Dawn Cunningham-Terrill, 38, was hit by a vehicle on the shoulder of eastbound I-64 East, according to the coroner’s office. Her death has been ruled an accident.
The accident happened about 4 a.m. at the 108-mile marker in Montgomery County, according to the coroner’s office. Cunningham-Terrill, a Pine Ridge resident, was taken to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital in Lexington but died just before 4:45 a.m.
The eastbound side of I-64 was closed from exit 101 to exit 110 for several hours while crews worked the scene, according to the Montgomery County sheriff’s office.
Cunningham-Terrill was one of several people who got out to help a driver who was initially involved in a single-vehicle crash, according to WKYT, the Herald-Leader’s reporting partner. The driver in the second crash hit the driver of the first car and four others, WKYT said. They were all taken to UK Hospital, and two have been released, WKYT said.
The Montgomery County sheriff’s office told WKYT no charges had been filed.
A GoFundMe page has been started for Cunningham-Terrill’s family.
“She was the laughter in any room, always smiling, always trying to do anything possible to make everyone else’s (life) a little easier and a little brighter,” said the fundraiser’s organizer, Jaycee Hurley.
