Police: Death of Kentucky college athlete thought to be from natural causes
The death of a student athlete at the University of the Cumberlands is believed to be the result of natural causes, police said Tuesday.
Foul play is not suspected in the death of the male student, who had a history of medical issues, said Williamsburg Police Chief Wayne Bird.
The university identified the student as Grant Brace, a 20-year-old junior from Louisville, Tenn. Brace came to the University of the Cumberlands in 2018 after attending Alcoa High School, near Knoxville, and was majoring in business, according to a news release.
“It is with a heavy heart and great sadness that we announce the loss of Grant Brace,” said Cumberlands President Larry Cockrum. “Grant’s life was cut far too short, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.”
Brace, a varsity wrestler, died Monday evening. Police were notified at 8:15 p.m.
Police think Brace died just after a practice session, Bird said.
The university announced the death to students Monday night, assuring them there was no threat to the campus community and requesting prayer for Brace’s family and friends.
Brace “brought high character and integrity” to the school’s athletics program, said Chris Kraftick, director of athletics.
“The entire athletic department is devastated by this news, and our hearts and prayers go out to his family, teammates, and friends,” Kraftick said.
The school canceled classes for Tuesday and arranged for ministers and counselors to be available to students.
