1 dead, teen flown to hospital after man hit in emergency lane of Kentucky road
One man died and a teen was hospitalized after a crash in Powell County Tuesday afternoon, according to Kentucky State Police.
The crash killed Charley Bailey, a 30-year-old Salyersville resident who was standing at the rear of his truck and trailer in the emergency lane when he was hit. Brendan Evans, an 18-year-old McDowell resident, was driving eastbound in a Chevrolet pickup truck when he crossed into the right lane and hit Bailey, police said.
Powell County Coroner Megan Davis pronounced Bailey dead on the scene, police said. Evans was flown to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital.
The collision investigation continues, police said. Authorities didn’t say if any charges would be filed.
The road was closed around 2:30 p.m., according to the Stanton Police Department. It reopened later Tuesday.
Some of Charley Bailey’s friends shared their thoughts about him on Facebook after the crash.
“Charley was an awesome friend and always had that smile on his face,” Timothy Ray Lykins said in a Facebook post.
Jason Lawson said he was a co-worker with Bailey at JAG Inc. Lawson said that Bailey was a truck driver who he knew well.
“He was one of a kind,” Lawson said. “Had a heart of gold!”
