Two Central Kentucky high schools won their respective class titles in the Kentucky Marching Band Championships Saturday night at Kroger Field, where Kentucky’s top 30 bands competed in the finals for five class titles.

Lafayette High School of Lexington claimed its 22nd state marching band championship by winning the AAAAA title with its show “Peace of Mind.” Madison Central High School of Richmond placed second and North Hardin High School of Radcliff took third.

The Lexington school, which fielded the state’s largest marching band with 212 members, has won the last four state championships. The Kentucky Music Educators Association canceled the 2020 season due to COVID-19.

Anderson County High School took top honors in class AAAA with its show “The Endless Echo,” outscoring Bourbon County High School in second and South Laurel High School in third.

Murray High School won class AAA in KMEA’s 35th annual state competition, followed by Estill County High School and Adair County High School. In class AA, Beachwood High School of Fort Mitchell took top honors, trailed by Glasgow High School and Larue County High School. Owensboro Catholic High School claimed the class A title, outpacing Williamstown High School and Mayfield High School.

This is the first year KMEA chose six bands from each class to compete in finals, which ran from 3:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday in Lexington. The size of the school and the size of the band is considered when determining a band’s competitive class.
