New expansion could boost internet access for hundreds of thousands in rural Kentucky
A national phone service company says it’s expanding in Kentucky and will provide better internet access to about 800,000 residents in the state, including many in rural areas.
T-Mobile announced on Wednesday that it has expanded access to its fixed wireless home internet service in several cities across the state. The company said nearly half of Kentucky residents with access to T-Mobile home internet are in rural areas and small towns. The company does provide 5G home internet where it’s available.
More than 500,000 Kentucky residents have either no access to traditional home broadband or only one choice for service, according to T-Mobile.
State Rep. Mary Beth Imes, a Republican from Murray, said in a statement that this expansion means Kentucky will have “a real competitive option for broadband internet where many households are still let without any option or any good option.”
T-Mobile said it’s easy to set up its internet service compared to landline internet service providers. The company will mail the gateway directly to someone’s home. Users can plug it in and connect to the internet using an app in less than 15 minutes, T-Mobile said.
T-Mobile’s internet plan costs $50 per month, according to the company. Below are the Kentucky cities that have access to T-Mobile internet.
