Lexington to get another office where people can renew or replace driver’s licenses
Lexington will get a second driver licensing office this summer.
The address of the new office and its opening date have not been announced, but it and six other newly-announced locations should be open by the end of June, Gov. Andy Beshear announced Friday.
The state said in a news release that the goal is to improve access.
The state is in the process of transitioning its driver licensing services from circuit court clerks’ offices in each county to regional driver licensing offices operated by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. So far, 106 counties have made the transition.
The other new locations opening this summer are in Henderson, Independence, London, Maysville, Mayfield and Pineville. The governor had also recently announced that a new office in Pikeville would open later this summer in its permanent location.
Most of the new offices announced Friday will open in temporary office locations “with plans to expand capacity or move to a future permanent location,” the governor’s office said in a news release.
An online search for an appointment at Lexington’s existing driver licensing office at 141 Leestown Center Way, Suite 125, on April 29 indicated that the next available appointments were on May 16.
Appointments are recommended and can be made online, though the state says most locations serve walk-in customers on a first-come, first served basis. Drivers can also renew online or by mail, and they now have the option to renew for eight years rather than four.
The state’s regional driver licensing offices serve all drivers who need a license but don’t require testing, regardless of what county the person lives in.
The state currently has 23 regional driver licensing offices in operation, along with a number of other pop-up locations in counties without a regional office.
“On Team Kentucky, we’re working every day to make sure all government services offered are up to the standard our families deserve,” Beshear said in a news release. “Driver’s licenses aren’t just credentials. They’re keys. They unlock so many other doors, like making your voice heard in an election, being able to drive to school or work as you pursue your goals or being able to travel on a plane or visit a military base to see loved ones.”
