Fire at high rise in Harlan reportedly causes minor injuries, displaces dozens of people
Dozens of people were reportedly displaced and several sustained what were described as minor injuries Friday night after a fire damaged a high rise apartment building in Harlan.
About five people were transported to the emergency room for smoke inhalation at the Harlan high rise, but three of them refused treatment, said William Clark Bailey, a dispatcher for the Harlan police. He said there were “no substantial injuries.”
Bailey estimated that about 50 people live in the building, and he said they would not be able to return there Friday night. Radio station WRIL 106.3 FM reported on its Facebook page that a temporary shelter had been set up and the Red Cross had been contacted.
Bailey said he believed the fire damage was contained to the sixth floor.
He said the fire was reported at about 8 p.m. by someone who saw smoke coming from the sixth floor.
The fire departments from Harlan and Sunshine responded, as did police from Harlan, Loyall, Evarts and the Harlan County sheriff’s office. and the Lifeguard EMS service.
