Grocery prices are up 13.5% nationally from last August, according to the latest U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Price Index.

Cereals and bakery products are up 16.4%, according to the federal agency, and dairy and related products are up 16.2%. Prices of non-alcoholic beverages and beverage materials have increased by 13.4%, while fruits and vegetables are 9.4% more expensive than in August 2021.

The CPI values above are not seasonally adjusted.

With grocery bills increasing, many consumers are likely looking for ways to ease costs and mitigate inflation. Here’s an item-by-item comparison of online grocery prices for Walmart, Aldi, Target, Kroger and Meijer in Lexington.

All prices are sourced online and actual costs may vary based on when and how you buy. Aldi’s prices are from third-party InstaCart.

The Walmart prices are for the location at 4051 Nicholasville Road in Lexington. Target prices are for the 1940 Pavillon Way location. Aldi’s prices are for the location at 126 Rojay Drive. Kroger prices are for the store at 4101 Tates Creek Centre Drive and Meijer prices are from the 351 Meijer Way location.

All prices are as of Sept. 14.

Dozen eggs

A dozen Great Value large eggs will run you $1.92 at Walmart. A package of 12 Grade A large eggs from Good & Gather at Target is $1.99, and a dozen Goldhen Grade A eggs are $2.15 at Aldi. Kroger’s dozen large white eggs cost $1.99, and a dozen eggs cost $2.39 at Meijer.

A 20-ounce loaf of white bread is $1 at Walmart, $1.19 at Target and $1.79 at Meijer. Kroger carries a 20-ounce loaf for $1.69, and Aldi offers a 20-ounce loaf for $1.09.

A gallon of 2% milk is $2.99 at Target, $3.65 at Aldi, $3.42 at Meijer and $3.49 at Kroger. Walmart’s 2% milk is $3.32 per gallon.

Chicken

Target sells boneless skinless chicken breast for $2.99 per pound, and Walmart’s is $2.94 per pound. Aldi carries chicken breast for $2.89 per pound, while Meijer’s is $3.29 per pound. Kroger’s is $2.99 for a pound.

Frozen pizza

A Jack’s 13.8-ounce frozen cheese pizza is $3.59 at Target, $3.62 at Walmart and $3.99 at Meijer. Kroger sells the same size Jack’s pizza for $4.99 regularly, but it’s currently on sale for $4.49. Aldi sells a Mama Cozzi’s 13.8-ounce cheese pizza for $3.65.

Granola bars

Nature Valley Granola Bars are $3.19 for a pack with 12 bars at Target, $3.79 at Meijer, $4.29 at Kroger (but currently on sale for $2.50) and $3.38 at Walmart. Aldi sells a variety pack with 10 bars for $1.75.

Coffee

A 25.9-ounce canister of Folgers coffee is $10.59 at Target and $10.79 at Meijer (although Meijer currently has it on sale for $8.49). Folgers coffee is $10.24 at Walmart and $11.49 at Kroger (on sale for $8.49 right now). Aldi carries a 24.2-ounce container of Beaumont Colombian Ground Coffee for $8.05.

What grocery store is the most popular in Kentucky?

Walmart is the most-visited grocery store in Kentucky, according to the latest numbers from Safe Graph, a company that uses anonymous mobile data.

The chain had more than 3.3 million visitors recorded by Safe Graph in the commonwealth in August, and Kroger was the runner-up with 944,012 visitors.
