A 6-year-old child has died and a woman and two other children were injured after a pickup truck hit their horse and buggy from behind.

The crash happened near 8104 Old Bowling Green Road in Barren County Monday morning, Kentucky State Police said in a news release.

State police said Trevor N. Walker, 23, of Glasgow, was driving east in a 2015 GMC Sierra when he hit the back of the horse-drawn vehicle.

The driver of the buggy, Ella Gingarich, 27, of Smiths Grove, and three children, ages 6, 3 and 1, were thrown out of the buggy, state police said.

Gingarich and the children were taken by helicopter to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where the 6-year-old died Tuesday. State police said Tuesday that one of the children was in critical but stable condition, while the other had been released from the hospital. Gingarich was in stable condition, according to state police.

State police said they were called to investigate just after 8 a.m. Monday by the Barren County sheriff’s office.
