A 10-year-old boy died Sunday evening in a house fire in Middlesboro, according to the Middlesboro Fire Department.

The fire happened just after 7 p.m. on Ironwood Road. Fire Chief Nick Miracle said the fire was very well-involved when firefighters arrived.

Six family members were home when the fire broke out and five were able to escape, according to Miracle. The Bell County Coroner’s Office said the victim’s name is Mark Smolick, 10.

Smolick was a student at Middlesboro Middle School, according to the coroner.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Kentucky Fire Marshal’s Office.
