‘Very suspicious.’ Police trying to ID remains found in burned car in Eastern Kentucky
Police are working to identify skeletal remains found Friday in a burned-out car in Greenup County.
The incident was “very suspicious,” Kentucky State Trooper Shane Goodall told the Herald-Leader. Law enforcement believe the person inside the car was a woman and are awaiting DNA identification.
“We believe we know who it is,” Goodall said. “But we’re just waiting for DNA to come back so we can go ahead and proceed with the investigation on who it is.”
The car and body were found around 12:55 p.m. along Sawpit Road, Goodall said. The road is near Kentucky Route 2 in southern Greenup County.
A portion of the woods along the gravel Sawpit Road was “still charred” Tuesday, WSAZ reported.
Sherry Dingess, who lives up the road from the scene, told the news station she called 911 after a man arrived at her house and told her what he’d seen.
“He was almost inconsolable,” Dingess said. “He was just distraught. I kind of broke down with him and was trying to help him.”
Goodall said Greenup County Sheriff’s deputies arrived at the scene and then asked KSP to come out and assist after finding a body in the vehicle.
“It’s a complete shock for something like that around here to happen,” Kelly Wilburn, another Sawpit Road resident, told WSAZ. “That’s all I’ve thought about since Friday is why somebody did that to her.”
